Anderson and Goldman are MIA and possibly dead. Alex reacts by immersing herself in her work; McKay tries to make her face reality; Percell is frustrated by growing contradictions of the war; Johnson is promoted; Anderson and Goldman are prisoners of the NVA, and try repeatedly to escape, eventually succeeding.

Alex and Myron admit their true feelings for each other, but she misses her plane to Paris when she has a chance to do an exclusive—and dangerous—interview with a VC officer in the tunnels outside Saigon. Meanwhile, Anderson and the rest of the platoon are having trouble adjusting to a new lieutenant and a flagrant peacenik – who happens to be their new medic Doc Hock.

Our guys have been transferred to MACV-SOG (studies and Observation Group) under the command of Colonel Carl Brewster. Goldman is unable to come to terms with his feelings regarding Alex’s death, thereby unnecessarily endangering the lives of his men on their first SOG mission, the ambush of a VC tax collector. Meanwhile, Zeke takes a leave and returns to the world to visit his ex-wife, Carol and their daughter ,Katie.

Johnson must fill Zeke’s shoes and deal with Percell who continues his downward spiral, attacking a "Chowhound" who has appropriated Percell’s care package from home. A "flash" from the past shows up in the form of Baker, now a driver for a Brigadier General.
